Robinson Cano reportedly has agreed to a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Mariners, which would be the third-most lucrative contract in Major League history.
Enrique Rojas of ESPN first reported the terms via Twitter and said that Cano will undergo a physical exam Monday in Seattle. Rojas’ report followed one by Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that said the sides were close to completing a deal.
The Mariners have not commented on or confirmed the reports.
All this came Friday morning after a report by the New York Daily News that said that talks between Cano and the Mariners had broken down Thursday when his agent, Jay-Z, raised the free agent’s price during a meeting in Seattle.
It had been reported that Seattle was making a serious push for the second baseman, widely considered the top available talent on this offseason’s free-agent market.
The contract terms, if accurate, would equal the deal Albert Pujols signed with the Angels two years ago. Only the two contracts Alex Rodriguez signed, one with the Rangers and the other with the Yankees, were for higher amounts.
The left-handed-hitting Cano is coming off a season — his ninth with the Yankees — in which he batted .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs, the fifth straight season he batted better than .300 and the third time in four years he drove in more than 100 runs. He has been an American League All-Star in each of the past four seasons and has won two Gold Gloves.
Cano has a career .309 batting average, .355 on-base percentage and .504 slugging percentage. He has hit 204 homers and 375 doubles
